A Mexican pharmacy can save you money but you should do
your homework first
A Mexican pharmacy attracts many people from
the U.S. who drive across the border to buy their medications. U.S. law
makes it legal to purchase up to 50 dosage units of a controlled drug
without a prescription providing that it is for personal use. The drugs
must be in their original containers and must be declared at the customs
office at the border crossing. Drugs that are not approved by the U.S.
Food & Drug Administration are not allowed to be declared and severe
fines, penalties and even jail time could result if you attempt to smuggle
them across the border.
Mexico is a stable, regulated republic with laws
regarding the manufacture and use of drugs and narcotics. Total sales to
foreigners exceeds two hundred million each year. Counterfeit drugs are
not very common in Mexico, however, generic and alternative brands are
very common.
You should talk to your doctor before you purchase
drugs from a Mexican pharmacy. If he emphatically says no then you should
re-think your decision. He may want you to take the non-generic form of
the medication for some reason.
If you decide to buy your medication in Mexico get a
“package insert” from a U.S. drug store. The “package insert” for
a drug is a piece of paper containing an amazing amount if information
about the drug. It will assist you in obtaining the correct generic and in
the correct dosage from the pharmacy in Mexico. |
